Schauspiel in englischer Sprache «The Importance of Being Earnest» – Oscar Wilde

Produktion: weiterspielen - Neuproduktion der Fassung für das Volkstheater Wien

Jack Worthing, a carefree young gentleman, is the inventor of a fictitious brother, Ernest. Jack uses this fictitious brother as an excuse to leave his country home, where he lives with his ward Cecily. So, from time to time, Jack travels to London, where he stays with his friend Algernon. During his London visits under the name Ernest, Jack falls in love with Algernon’s cousin Gwendolen. Gwendolen returns this love, for she decided to only marry a man named Ernest. Meanwhile, Algernon also invents a fictitious friend to avoid family obligations in London. Returning home to the country from London, Jack finds that Algernon has arrived there under the identity of the nonexistent brother Ernest. Algernon falls madly in love with Cecily, who has long been enamoured of Jack’s mysterious brother Ernest. With the arrival of Gwendolen and her mother, Lady Bracknell, chaos erupts. As the story progresses, misunderstandings and mistaken identities lead to comedic confrontations, particularly between Gwendolen and Cecily who discover they are both pursuing the same nonexistent man named Ernest. The play culminates in a series of revelations about the characters′ true identities, ultimately challenging the conventions of Victorian society regarding marriage and reputation. Wilde’s witty dialogue invites audiences to reflect on the often absurd nature of social norms.
